In order for The Department of Buildings (DOB) to issue a Certificate of Occupancy or pass the necessary inspection required for a Basic Business Licence, your property/properties can not have open permits, whether they were issued to the current or previous owner.
If you know that your property has open permits, or we inform you during the licensing process that you do have open permits, you will need to ensure that all permits have been closed before the property inspection. Continue reading the instructions on how to close permits.
First, if you are unsure whether there are open permits, you can check your property’s status at Scout, DC’s Property Verification System.
Fortunately, scheduling permit inspections is straightforward. Just call 202-442-9557 to reach the District’s automated scheduling system. You will be asked to choose a date, enter your contact information, and then wait for the inspection. Before you call, make sure you know your permit number, the building address, and the three-digit inspection code. You must provide the correct telephone number when you schedule, so the inspector can contact you on the day of inspection.
After you pass the inspection, your results typically take 24-48 business hours to be processed by DOB.
