The short answer: DC does not publish a specific deadline.
After failing a BBL inspection, the most common question landlords ask is: how long do I have to fix the items and schedule a reinspection? Unfortunately, the DC Department of Buildings (DOB) does not publish a specific repair deadline for new BBL applicants.
Why we can't give you an exact date
The absence of a published deadline doesn't necessarily mean no rule exists — DC agencies don't always publish every requirement publicly. This means we can't tell you with certainty that there is no deadline, and we wouldn't want to give you assurance that later turns out to be wrong.
What we recommend
Email DOB directly at dob@dc.gov, reference your inspection, and ask them to confirm in writing one of the following:
- The specific date by which repairs must be completed, or
- That no deadline applies to your situation
Getting this in writing from the agency protects you if any issue arises later around the time taken to make repairs.
A note for renewal applicants
If you are renewing an existing BBL (rather than applying for the first time), a separate rule applies: you must obtain a passing inspection before your renewal date, and DC will cancel a license if a passing inspection is not obtained within 90 days of the renewal application. If this applies to your situation, contact us and we can help you think through the timing.
What happens next
Once your repairs are complete and you're ready to reschedule, a $90 reinspection fee from DC will apply. If RentJiffy is handling your inspection coordination, reach out to us at support@rentjiffy.com and we'll get it on the books.
