What Are the Next Steps After I Submit My Application? (New License Only)

This article applies only to new license applications. If you are looking for information about the next steps after submitting an application for a license renewal, please refer to this article: What to Expect After Submitting Your License Renewal Application

Once you’ve submitted your application for a rental housing license through RentJiffy, several steps take place before your license is issued. Below is a breakdown of what to expect and what you may need to do to ensure a smooth process.

1. Application Review and Processing

After submission, the RentJiffy team will review your application for completeness. If any information is missing or requires clarification, we will contact you via email. To avoid delays, be sure to monitor your inbox and respond promptly.

2. Application Processing

Your application package consists of multiple applications that must be processed in a specific order. We think of each application process as a module. The typical order is:

  • Business Tax Registration (first step)
  • Business License Application (after tax registration is completed)
  • RAD Registration (final step)

However, if the ownership listed on the application includes a business entity that needs to be registered with DC, this module must be completed before any other process begins. If the business is not registered or not in good standing, this will cause the application documents to be rejected and subsequent delays.

If your application includes a Certificate of Occupancy (CO) application, this module will be processed after business tax registration but before the business license application.

3. Inspections

If your application includes a Certificate of Occupancy (CO) application, an inspection may be required as part of obtaining the CO. Since this requirement is determined only after the CO application is reviewed by DC, we will notify you as soon as we are informed.

For properties classified as single-family homes, condominium units, cooperative units, accessory dwelling units (ADUs), or two-unit properties, a license inspection is required. This inspection takes place as part of the business license application module.

  • If you’ve hired RentJiffy to manage the inspection, we will email you with the scheduled date once we can request it.
  • If you’ve elected to handle the inspection yourself, we will email you with scheduling instructions as soon as we reach that stage.

If your application includes a Certificate of Occupancy, the license inspection will take place after the CO is issued, as past failures for the license inspection have caused issues in the CO approval process.

If deficiencies are found during any inspection, you will need to address them and pass a reinspection before moving on to the next application module.

4. Additional Information Requests from DC Government

Throughout the process, DC Government agencies may request additional documentation or clarification. RentJiffy will notify you via email if any additional information is needed. Please regularly check your email, as some requests may require action from you.

5. Clean Hands Compliance

Before issuing your license, the DC Department of Licensing and Consumer Protection (DLCP) will verify your compliance with the Clean Hands mandate. By law, a license cannot be issued if you are found to be non-compliant.

  • If we are notified that you are non-compliant, we will inform you immediately.
  • You must resolve any issues before DLCP can issue your license.

What Is the Clean Hands Mandate?

The Clean Hands mandate states that you cannot owe the Government of the District of Columbia more than $100 or have any outstanding tax returns among other things.

6. License Issuance and Confirmation

Once all requirements are met, your license will be issued. You will receive a confirmation email from us with your newly issued license attached.

7. RAD Registration

More commonly known as Rent Control Registration or Rent Control Exemption, this is the final step in the process. The RAD application cannot be signed before the business license is issued, as it must include a copy of the issued license.

When your license is issued, you will receive a second email asking you to electronically sign RentJiffy documents. This email will arrive within a minute of the license issuance email, so be on the lookout.

How to Ensure a Smooth Process

  • Check Your Email Frequently – Respond promptly to any RentJiffy or DC Government requests.
  • Prepare for Inspection – Ensure your property meets all compliance requirements before the scheduled date.
  • Verify Business Standing – If applying under a business entity, ensure it is registered and in good standing.
  • Address Any Requests Quickly – Any delays in submitting additional documentation can extend the process.
