To create a Mytax.dc.gov account, you will need a few items. The instructions will differ depending on whether you have filed taxes in DC before and whether you applied for your Basic Business License as a person using your social security number or as a business and/or using an employer identification number or ITIN.
I am an individual or a Trust, using my social security number, AND I have filed taxes with DC in the last two years.
One point of note: if multiple people were listed as owners in the license application, the tax account must relate to the primary filer. When looking at your license, the first name in the owner's section would be the primary filer.
Grab your tax last tax return from D.C., as you will need information from this return to validate yourself when creating your account.
Refer to the PDF attachment below titled MyTax Account Setup INDIVIDUAL. This is a step-by-step PDF published by the DC Tax Office. When you reach the verification step (mentioned on Page 5), you can verify using a Notice Number or “Information Related To A Registered Account.” If you select “Information Related To A Registered Account” and then for Account Type “Individual Income Tax,” you can use information from a previously filed and accepted tax return with the Office of Tax and Revenue. The return must be related to the same social security number as the primary filer for the Basic Business License application. An OTR agent told us that the tax return can be at most two tax cycles ago and that you must use the last return filed. For instance, in 2024, the oldest return you would be able to use would be 2022.
I am an individual or a Trust, using a social security number but I have not previously filed taxes with DC in the last two years.
To create a MyTax account, you will need a NOTICE NUMBER, which will be assigned to you by the DC Office of Tax and Revenue (OTR) and will appear on a Notice of Business Tax Registration which will be mailed to you by OTR once your tax registration is finalized. RentJiffy will email you once the tax registration has been accepted (which is always before the license is issued). Keep in mind that it can take up to four weeks to receive this notice.
We also recommend sharing the Notice of Business Tax Registration with your accountant or tax preparer as it goes over all taxes OTR has registered you for.
Refer to the PDF attachment below titled MyTax Account Setup INDIVIDUAL. When getting to the verification section use the instructions on Page 5. Do not use Page 6 as you will not have a previously filed tax return with D.C.
I am a Trust, using an EIN or a Business Entity (Corporation, LLC, Partnership)
