How often does a license need to be renewed?

A Rental Property License is good for two years or four years. At the end of two or four years, you should receive a renewal bill from DC Government typically 30 days before the renewal date.

We suggest that you check your license for its expiration date and then mark your calendar that 30 days before if you have not received the renewal bill to contact the Department of Licensing and Consumer Protection for the District of Columbia. Renewing on time is pertinent and failure to do so can cause late fee penalties of $500 as well as fines for operating without a license.

NOTE: D.C. Government considers the renewal bill a courtesy only and not a requirement. That means even if you do not receive the bill that you are still responsible for renewing your license.
